Careless Whisper in Full Force at Rackspace

I am sitting at my desk with my head deep in the weeds and all of a sudden I hear the start of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” by a saxophonist. I stood up to see what was going on, along with everyone else around me. Rackers slowly stopped doing what they were doing, stood up and searched for the origin of this music. From afar, I see a shirtless man jamming on the saxophone. Was he a Racker? Was it someone’s birthday? He slowly started making his way through the office and as he continued, more Rackers started following. It was like the scene of when Forrest Gump grew his following by running and not stopping. Nobody knew why they were following but they were sure there was a purpose.
Later that day, snippets of the video started popping up on the interwebs. I really thought it was a Racker that was dared to do this. I went to the source and found out that he wasn’t a Racker. A Racker actually asked him to pay Rackspace a visit. He thought Rackers could use a few laughs on a Monday.
This is what makes Rackspace a special place to work. Putting a smile on someone’s face doesn’t take a lot of work, just some thoughtfulness and that’s what Rackspace is about. This is also why customers love us.

Rackspace featured on CNN Money

CNN Money visited the Rackspace headquarters a few weeks ago to shoot the following video as part of their “2011 Best Companies to Work For” video series. My favorite quote was from Lanham: “We don’t have a dress code. The only code we have about dress is ‘Please wear something.’”
Evolution of Data Centers

We just launched another infographic on the Rackspace Cloud blog covering the evolution of data centers from the 1960s to today.
You might be thinking, “this has nothing to do with me.” Well, it does. Every time you update your Facebook page or upload a photo to Flickr or send a Tweet, you are using the power of a computer sitting inside a data center. As we transfer more and more data across the Internet, the more and more power we use. This is why Facebook launched the OpenCompute project – to showcase how they’ve built a green data center – and with the hopes that through collaboration with other technology providers, like Rackspace, we can build greener data centers.
We’ve collected a series of videos across the Internet from each era and it’s interesting to see how much has changed over the course of 50 years. Check it out.
Data Storage is On Everyone’s Mind

I published this infographic on the Rackspace blog yesterday. We received some really awesome statistics about data stored online from various whitepapers published. After reading through all the research, a few things came to mind:
1- If you’re looking for a field to jump into, data storage technology is the place to be
2- Companies aren’t necessarily responsible only for the data they generate, they’re partially liable for the data their employees, clients and partners generate as well
3- Today it’s exabytes, tomorrow it’s zettabytes
