Jefferson High School 4th Annual Trick, Treat & Trot 5K
| October 27, 2009 | Posted by Angela under Community Involvement, Local Places & Events, Why I like San Antonio |
We were blessed with a beautiful weekend in San Antonio. The Jefferson High School 4th Annual Trick Treat & Trot 5K was a big success. My Uncle Paul is head basketball coach and teacher at Jefferson High School. He puts this event together every year to help raise money for the basketball team to attend a tournament in Washington DC. As a graduate of Jefferson and coaching there for 20 years now, he does a lot for the school and the community. Many of his students have never had the opportunity to travel outside of San Antonio and they might never have that opportunity. Participating in a tournament in Washington DC gives them that opportunity and what greater place to go then our nation’s capital.
Former Mayor Ed Garza and Mayor Julian Castro, both Jefferson graduates, along with the Spurs Coyote and Silver Dancers all came out to support the event. It’s always great to see family, friends and neighbors come together to support our youth.

Teen “Sexting” is illegal BUT we promote it on the radio
| October 19, 2009 | Posted by Angela under Random |
Sexting has become more and more common among our youth. They think that sending a nude or semi nude photo of themselves to one person will stay with that one person and don’t realize the risk of it being sent out to others. The first time I realized the seriousness of sexting was when I saw a case being featured on the Today Show. An 18 year old girl sent a nude photo of herself to her boyfriend. Once they broke up, that photo was sent out to everyone at her school. She was humiliated and bullied for a year before she ended up committing suicide. Our legal system is really trying to crack down on this. If you are a minor (18 years or younger), creating, transmitting, and even possessing a nude, seminude, or sexually explicit image of yourself can be considered child pornography. It can be prosecuted as a state or federal felony and can even lead to having to register as a sex offender. While I do agree there should be legal consequences, I’m unsure if it should be filed as child pornography. Our youth does need to understand that sexting is unacceptable behavior and there are laws in place to protect them. In spite of all our work trying to stop sexting, we allow a song like “LOL, Smiley Face” on the radio for our youth to listen to. Here’s a snapshot of the lyrics (click here for all the lyrics):
I Love Fisher Price
See now my shorty text me, send your boy a smiley face.
Gucci-Mane X-Rated, we could make a sex tape
Pics on my iPhone, Gucci on her iPod
When she turn around, *** make you say, oh God
Am I the only one that seems something wrong with this?
Maybe the Wreath wasn’t made for the Front Door
| October 18, 2009 | Posted by Angela under Random |
Jason and I had a typical married couple Sunday. We had breakfast at the local Taco House, went out to buy a gift for our friends that just had a baby, bought a new mattress and went grocery shopping. While at Target, I went to see the wreaths on clearance. I couldn’t help from busting out laughing because I saw a particular wreath that screamed “Lady Gaga” instead of “I go on a front door.” I am a Lady Gaga fan and her outfits at the VMA’s this past year were way beyond interesting. As you can see below, you see how this made me laugh …. and freak Jason out a bit.

The FTC is Right: Readers Should Know if Bloggers are Being Paid by Advertisers
| October 7, 2009 | Posted by Angela under Business & Technology |
My father called me yesterday and said “Hey did hear about the blog and advertising regulation?” He was listening to NPR and they were covering a story on the recent Federal Trade Commission announcement regarding rules that require bloggers and tweeters to publicly disclose if they are being paid by advertisers.
Any news regarding social media, Rackspace or technology in general – a family member will always contact Jason or I. Forget about me checking Virl.com everyday – I have my family to keep me posted!
So I checked the article he was referring to and read about the updated FTC rules. Basically if you are blogging or tweeting for money, you need to make that clear to your readers and followers.
First, let me just say that my blog: safun.com is a personal blog and nobody pays me to write anything. I write because I like to write. What I choose to write about are strictly personal interests and experiences.
Before the Internet, word of mouth marketing was simply one individual telling another individual in person about a product they used and liked – it was maybe over lunch or coffee or at a bar. More than likely, that person was not getting paid to tell their friends about a product. The Internet, and specifically these new social media platforms, allows people to do word of mouth marketing at an exponential level. Rather than telling one person, you can tell 100 at a time.
Companies have been catching on and are shifting from traditional advertising to a more grassroots approach because it’s now easier to do so with all the latest social media tools available. However, it’s unfortunate because advertisers are paying the well respected popular bloggers and tweeters to promote their product and aren’t making it clear they are getting paid to do so. The Internet allows you to be very deceiving.
Do you remember one of the first YouTube video blogs – LonelyGirl15? It was this girl that video blogged from her bedroom. She was this cute, innocent looking girl that talked about her simple, but real life and all the drama that came with it. People were drawn to her and she grew a fan base quickly. After episodes of watching, people became suspicious of her realness. Turns out, she was an actress! Bummer! It just shows how easy it is to not tell the truth on the Internet and yet seem very believable.
I think the FTC won’t be able to control everything simply because the magnitude of the Internet; it just doesn’t seem doable. However, I do believe that it is important that anyone adding content to the public Internet, if they are doing it for money, they need to make that clear. It’s not fair for readers to not know.
And readers, make sure you know what you’re reading. Advertisers are taking over and the charm in social media platforms is slowly diminishing. Although I do think Facebook has done it right so far. (Can you believe I didn’t say Twitter?)
No Excuses

This video is my new medicine. We as a society make too many excuses on why we can’t do something. Life is too short for us to look back and say “I should have.”
