ACL 2008
| September 30, 2008 | Posted by Angela under The Arts, Film, Music, Fashion |
The Austin City Limits Music Festival is an annual 3 day music and art festival held at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. This year marks the 7th annual festival. ACL has grown tremendously since the inaugural festival in 2002. It brought more than 130 bands on eight stages, including rock, country, folk, indie, Americana, hip-hop, reggae, and bluegrass, and attracted a crowd of about 65,000 visitors each day. This year’s lineup included bands like: N.E.R.D, Beck, FooFighters, Gnarls Barkley, The Raconteurs, Erykah Badu, Robert Earl Keen. They keep the Texas favorites and bring in a wide variety of others.
Jason and I were debating on whether or not to buy a 3 day pass or just a 1 or 2 day pass. We went with the Sunday pass because I really wanted to see the Foo Fighters. My brother and Layla went all 3 days. For $160/ticket to see 130 bands is not a bad deal at all! Our 1 day pass was only $80 still but next year we might plan to do the 3 day weekend pass depending on the line up.
Regardless of who plays, you are bound to have a good time. You might discover bands you hadn’t heard of before and could become a big fan.
Jason, my sister and myself drove up to Austin Sunday afternoon and arrived to ACL at around 2pm. We were just in time to see Flyleaf, a band I actually had never really listened to and ended up really liking their music. We went on to see Gnarls Barkley, Blues Traveler and the best closing was the Foo Fighters. The FooFighters we so amazing! This post describes it best: Epic.
A brief overview of what the show was like:
1- Held in city center Zilker Park in a big open grass area surrounded by trees. You can take in your chairs, blankets, umbrellas so you can get comfortable in the sun, drink a beer and chill.
2- September in Texas is still warm so you will find people wearing little to no clothing. Guys without shirts, Girls in bathing suits….and you can imagine what else.
3- Austin is weird so naturally, you will see weird random things. Ladies with armpit hair, groups smoking pipes and joints, piercings in random places.
4- Good food! ACL only allows local restaurants in to sell food. You will not find turkey legs, funnel cakes, concession stand nachos…thank goodness!
5- They care about the environment. There were volunteers walking around everywhere collecting recyclable aluminum and plastic items. There was literally almost no trash on the ground and for 65,000 people, that is an accomplishment!
6- It’s an art show too. Vendors set up to sell hand crafted jewelry, unique apparel, music goodies.
7- Bands! You can get to listen to wide variety of good bands on multiple stages. It’s crazy!
ACL is a blast. I didn’t know this but the producers for ACL (C3 Presents) also co-produce Lollapalooza. I totally recommend this event to anyone who likes live music in general. It’s a good bang for your buck. Plus too, Austin is a fun town to visit. And remember to bring your own unique flag so your group can find you when you get lost! I saw dirty underwear, a dinosaur, UT flags, US flags, Cowboys flags…make it unique!

ServerBeach plays Dodgeball
| September 30, 2008 | Posted by Angela under Local Places & Events |
ServerBeach competed in the San Antonio Sports Foundation Duck n Dodge Tournament this past weekend. It was being presented by 99.5 Kiss FM and Kens 5 TV and being hosted at the new Rackspace building’s parking lot. All entry fees were going to support the San Antonio Sports Foundation youth sports and fitness programs. We got a team together last minute to compete in the tournament and I committed to play. The last time I played dodgeball was in grade school and I thoroughly enjoyed it! This was a bit different as it was coed and we were all adults, having fun being kids again. We showed up ready to bring it on. Although we had good team spirit, we literally had our butts handed to us. We won 1 out of maybe 10? At least we didn’t go undefeated! I swear these teams were practicing on the weekends or something. We really aren’t that bad! Next year, we will have cool team gear and be ready to really bring it on. This was just practice for us. All that matters is that we had a blast!

Catching Up!
| September 24, 2008 | Posted by Angela under Family Stuff, My Travel Adventures |
It has been a while since my last blog posting! It’s not like there isn’t anything to post, I just haven’t devoted the time to post.
Summer went by so quickly. We finished our wedding thank you cards and got our house back into to order. But even after that was completed, Jason and I have been on the go. There is always something to do or something to see.
Jason and I took a weekend trip to visit my cousins in Chicago in July. I was just in Chicago this past April for my bachelorette party which was a blast.  Jason and I hit a Cubs game, shopped in Wicker Park and on Michigan Avenue, and I got to do a long run with my cousins down Lake Shore Blvd. I also caught up with my friend Regina who I had met when I studied in Spain. Good times!
Then of course our traditional Labor Day weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas. Every year my entire extended family on both sides go to to North Padre for the weekend. We have been doing this since I was a baby and even before that, my parents had been going since they were kids.
It’s always a fun weekend with my crazy family. Good food, good drinks, sand volleyball! My in-laws live in Corpus so Jason and I spent time with his family as well.
This past Labor Day was a very special one. My brother, Wayne Anthony, proposed to his girlfriend of 6 years. It was beautiful how it happened. The condo we stay at is a beach front property. Our entire family, about 80 people, went down to the beach at around 8:30pm. They held up a 10ft by 5ft sign that said “Will you marry me Layla?†They also lit huge sparklers! They were all facing the condo. If you were at the condo and looked out to the beach, you were looking down to the beautiful sparklers and glowing sign. Wayne Anthony took Layla to the balcony on the 5th floor. She looked down to see what was going on and when she read the sign, she turned to Wayne Anthony and he was on one knee. She said YES! Another year of wedding planning.
My brother and Layla live in Austin and we are going to go visit them this weekend and hit up ACL on Sunday. I haven’t been to ACL in about 6 years! It should be fun.
We are going to the Grand Canyon for the weekend in November. Jason is looking for a new lens for our camera. We want to be able to take some great photos without having to use software for touch ups. Lens aren’t cheap so we want to make sure we get the right one. If you have recommendations, let me know!
And most importantly, we are going to Rome! It was somewhat last minute. Jason and I have been wanting to take a trip to Europe but wanted to wait until next fall when flights are cheaper. I received an alert for a pretty low round trip fare to Rome in March and I acted upon it! We will be there for 2 weeks and plan to visit Paris, Milan, Venice and Florence in addition to Rome. Any recommendations for hotels in any of these cities would be greatly appreciated! I really wanted to make it to Spain so I can visit my friends but we will have to make that another trip due to all the things we want to do and see within a short time frame.
It’s going to be another adventurous year. I will keep you posted!
